Instructions
- Plant garlic in the fall, 6 weeks prior to freeze. Usually mid-October.
- Since garlic is a heavy feeder, fertilize your soil with a good all-purpose fertilizer and/or compost.
- Separate the cloves from each bulb.
- It’s best to do an alcohol soak for 20 minutes in a full-strength sterilizer such as 70% Vodka. Drain cloves then put them in a fertilizer soak. (https://keeneorganics.com/garlic-fertilization-soak/) to give them a boost which reduces disease, increases plant health, and increases bulb size.
- Plant garlic into prepared soil about 3 inches deep, and about 6-9 inches apart with the tip of the clove up and the roots down.
- Cover the tip of clove with soil.
- Cover with 3-6 inches of mulch (straw, leaves, etc.) Wait until spring.
- In the spring weed, weed, weed!
- In late May early June keep weeding and cut scapes. The scapes are delicious. Also, cutting scapes will increase the size of the bulb.
- Harvest when you have 5 full green leaves left or 50% of leaves at botton have died.
- Cure garlic out of the sun and in an area with good circulation until fully dry; about 3 weeks.
- Properly store your garlic.
- Eat and enjoy.
